Common Myths

Rape is not that common.
        In the United States, 1.3 rape occur each minute which means that in
        an hour there are 78 rapes and in a day there are 1,871 rapes.
        1 in 3 girls are sexually assaulted before the age of 18.
         1 in 6 boys are sexually assaulted before the age of 18.
         1 in 4 women are sexually assaulted.
         1 in 13 men are sexually assaulted

Elderly people do not get raped.
        Statistics are unknown for the elderly, but we do know that less than
        a third of elderly rapes are ever reported to law enforcement and that
        76% of elderly rapes have at least one witness present.

Strangers are more likely to be the perpetrators of rape.
        73% of victims know their perpetrators in some way.

Many people report rapes that didn't actually happen.
        Only 3% of reported rapes are false reports.

Most rapists go to jail.
        97% of rapists never spend a day in jail.
        Only 9% of rapists get prosecuted.
        Only 5% of rapists are convicted of felony charges. 

Most rapes are reported to law enforcement.
    54% of rapes are not reported.
